PDX Airport to Downtown Portland: Your Options Compared

Oct 3, 2026 · Portland Private Town Car
You have four main ways to get from Portland International Airport (PDX) to downtown Portland: the MAX Red Line, a taxi, a rideshare app, or a private car service. The best choice depends on your budget, your luggage, and how much you want a smooth arrival after a long flight.
This guide compares each option on cost, travel time and convenience, based on years of driving the PDX-to-downtown route every day.
Option 1: MAX Red Line light rail
The MAX Red Line is the cheapest way downtown: $2.80 for an adult fare and about 39 minutes of travel. Trains run about every 15 minutes most of the day, and the station is near baggage claim on the lower level of the terminal (TriMet).
- Best for: solo travelers with light luggage who are staying near a downtown stop.
- Watch out for: carrying bags on and off the train, a walk from the stop to your hotel, and late-night arrivals when service is less frequent.
Option 2: Taxi or rideshare (Uber, Lyft)
A rideshare is the most common choice. An UberX from PDX to Portland has averaged about $37 over the past year (Uber), and the drive is about 8.5 miles, roughly 20 minutes without traffic. Taxis wait at the curb and usually cost a bit more.
- Best for: travelers who want door-to-door service at a mid-range price.
- Watch out for: surge pricing at busy times, waiting in the rideshare pickup area after a long flight, and not knowing what car or driver you'll get. Larger groups often need an XL, which costs more.
Option 3: Private car service
With a private car service, your chauffeur is waiting when you land, so you skip the train platform and the rideshare line. You book ahead and know your vehicle and price before you travel.
At Portland Private Town Car, PDX pickups include 45 minutes of free wait time after your flight lands. Our Cadillac Escalade ESV seats up to 6 passengers, and our Mercedes Sprinter seats up to 12, so families and teams can ride together with their luggage. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
- Best for: business travelers, families, groups, late-night arrivals, and anyone with lots of luggage.
- Trade-off: it costs more than MAX or a standard rideshare, and you need to book in advance.

Quick comparison
- MAX Red Line: $2.80 per adult, about 39 min, not door to door. Best for solo travelers with light luggage.
- Rideshare (UberX): about $37 average, about 20 min plus pickup wait, door to door. Best for a mid-range budget.
- Taxi: usually a bit more than rideshare, about 20 min, door to door. Best if you don't want to use an app.
- Private car service: quoted upfront, about 20 min with the car waiting, door to door. Best for business travelers, families and groups.
Travel times are without heavy traffic; weekday rush hour on I-84 and I-5 can add 15 minutes or more.
Tips for arriving at PDX
- Plan for rush hour. Flights landing between 3 and 6 p.m. on weekdays often hit heavy traffic into downtown.
- Know your hotel's nearest MAX stop before you land if you plan to take the train.
- Book a car ahead for late-night arrivals, big groups, or lots of luggage. Airport lines are longest when many flights land at once.
- Share your flight number when you book a car service, so your driver can plan around delays.
